Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A utilitarian vessel built for ancient commerce, this Roman amphora exhibits the distinctive features of transport amphorae used throughout the Empire's vast trade networks. Made from coarse orange terracotta, the amphora presents a sharply ovoid body with horizontal ribbing, a narrow cylindrical neck, and a long, pointed base designed for easy storage upright in sand or in racks aboard ships. Two tall strap handles stretch from the shoulder to the thickened rim, creating a strong grip for lifting and pouring. The pointed foot, a practical solution for stacking in ship hulls or embedding in market stalls, further emphasizes the object's maritime function. Vessels of this type were typically used to store and transport staples like wine, olive oil, garum (fermented fish sauce), or grain, and were a common sight in Roman ports from Spain to the Levant. Size: 7.5" L x 9" W x 19.5" H (19 cm x 22.9 cm x 49.5 cm); 21.5" H (54.6 cm) on included custom stand.
