Description:

Egypt, late period, ca. 700 - 30 BCE. Ibis, a water bird, which was a symbol of Thoth, inventor of writing and patron deity of the scribes. A large perched ibis bird composed of very finely cast and detailed bronze legs, realistically detailed feet and long toe nails. Individually cast bronze head depicted with a long curved beak, and recessed socket eyes, which probably once held polished stone eyes. Carved wood body completely covered with woven linen cloth. A nice example. Lucite block base. Size: 9.25”L x 5”H (23.5 x 12.7cm).

Provenance: Private NYC. collection, by descent from Frishman Galleries, Tel Aviv, acquired 1970’s.
