Description:

Ancient Near East / Central Asia, Northwestern Iran, to Eastern Turkey, Luristan culture, Early Iron Age, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A bronze sword, cast using the lost wax technique and exhibiting the hallmark craftsmanship of the region. The long, slender blade is reinforced by a prominent midrib and tapers elegantly to a fine point. The weapon is cast from a low-tin copper alloy (bronze), consistent with regional Luristan metallurgical practices. The hilt is visually and technically striking. Its squared grip flows into an angular, forked guard featuring sharp, flared projections that wrap partially down the shoulders of the blade. Above this, the pommel takes a "split-ear" or "double ear" form, creating the appearance of twin "lobes" or upright fins. Size: 27.5" L x 2.75" W (69.8 cm x 7 cm)

Provenance: private Dayton, Maryland, USA collection; ex-private F. B. collection, Maryland, USA, acquired between 1990 to 2010
