Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A small leaded bronze statuette of the god Mercury (Hermes in the Greek pantheon), portrayed standing nude atop a flared circular base. The youthful deity is shown in a frontal stance with defined musculature and stylized features. He wears a winged petasos (traveler's cap), a traditional attribute of Mercury as the messenger god. In his left hand he holds a caduceus - his serpent-entwined staff - while his right hand carries what appears to be a money pouch, symbolizing his role as the god of commerce and wealth. Mercury's cult was widespread throughout the Roman world, and such figures may have served as domestic cult images or votive offerings. Size: 1.25" W x 2.75" H (3.2 cm x 7 cm)
