Description:

Roman Empire, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A refined marble relief fragment depicting Apollo, the Greco-Roman god of music, prophecy, and the arts, shown seated in a relaxed pose with his lyre held at his side. The youthful god is rendered in classical style with softly modeled musculature, draped in a himation that falls across his shoulder and lap. His upward gaze and slightly parted lips convey the introspective calm associated with divine inspiration. The lyre, carved in high detail with clearly delineated arms and string lines, confirms Apollo’s identity as Musagetes — leader of the Muses and patron of harmony. Size: 9.25" W x 20.5" H (23.5 cm x 52.1 cm)

Reliefs of this type were commonly featured in funerary monuments, villa architecture, and public dedications, especially in Roman contexts that emphasized cultural refinement, divine favor, or personal piety.
