Description:

Southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 350 - 325 BCE. A beautifully preserved red-figure bell krater from Magna Graecia, attributed to the followers of the Lecce Painter, one of the prominent vase-painters of the South Italian Apulian school. The vessel is distinguished by a broad flaring rim, twin upturned handles, and a deep, rounded bowl set upon a tall foot. Size: 12.6" W x 13" H (32 cm x 33 cm)

Side A presents a seated Nike, elegantly winged and richly adorned in a finely pleated chiton. Her intricately styled hair frames a serene visage as she raises a beaded wreath in her outstretched hand. Before her stands a veiled woman draped in a voluminous himation, evoking a scene of veneration or divine exchange.

Side B depicts two women walking in procession, each cloaked in enveloping himatia—hallmarks of the Apulian red-figure tradition. The vessel is further embellished with large palmettes and volutes beneath each handle, a classic meander band encircling the lower body, and a laurel wreath motif just below the rim.

Provenance: Ex-private UK collection; acquired on the Dutch art market. Previously in the collection of Frederik Van Driel, Maastricht, 1993.
