Description:

Southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 350 to 325 BCE. A substantial and finely executed red-figure bell krater from Magna Graecia, attributed to the Sisyphus Group, a distinguished circle of vase painters active in Apulia during the late 5th to early 4th century BCE. The vessel features a broad, inverted bell-shaped body tapering to a disc foot, with a thick, flaring rim and a pair of graceful loop handles affixed to the upper body. The surface is coated in lustrous black glaze, enriched by red-figure decoration and refined painted detail. A band of meander and chequered patterning encircles the lower body, while the rim is adorned with a frieze of laurel leaves. Size: 10.25" W x 10.62" H (26 cm x 27 cm)

Side A depicts a nude male youth standing in relaxed contrapposto, wearing a fillet and holding a situla in his lowered right hand. He faces a draped female figure, whose extended right arm offers a patera; her hair is arranged in a sakkos. Between them, a flaming altar suggests a ritual offering or votive moment.

Side B presents a pair of ephebes wrapped in long himatia, facing one another in quiet exchange. One leans on a staff, while a set of halteres (jump weights) is position.
