Description:

Western Europe, United Kingdom, ca. mid 19th century CE. A steel weapon designed for use with the Pattern 1856 Enfield rifle - merging the functionality of a sword and bayonet, and nicknamed "yataghan" after the curved Ottoman sabers that inspired its form. The hilt includes a muzzle ring guard, a press-checkered leather scale grip, and a grooved steel pommel with a spring-loaded push release button, designed for attachment to a rifle barrel. The blade bears multiple military inspection marks. One side is stamped with a crown above "VR" (Victoria Regina), signifying service during Queen Victoria's reign. The reverse displays a broad arrow - denoting British government ownership - above "WD" (War Department), and a small crown above "E" (Enfield), over the number "27," likely an inspector's or unit mark. Sword-bayonets like this were produced in large quantities and widely exported. Notably, many were sold to both Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War. Size: 28" L x 4" W (71.1 cm x 10.2 cm); blade only: 22.75" L x 1.25" W (57.8 cm x 3.2 cm)
