Eastern Mediterranean, Byzantine Empire, ca. 500 to 1000 CE; Central Asia & Near East, Bactrian, ca. 2nd millennium BCE to early 1st millennium CE. A pair of miniature amulets. The first is a sheet gold (88% gold, 8% silver) bust of a woman, in delicate repousse facing forward, her visage crowned by what may be a headdress or coiffure, evoking divine or elite status. The crown is pierced laterally for suspension, probably a bead for a necklace or other adornment. The second is a diminutive Bactrian figure cast in leaded bronze is shown nude with sharply stylized arms and legs formed by fine incised lines. Likely seated cross-legged or kneeling, this amulet bears a partial loop on its back, suggesting its use as a pendant or charm. Together, the duo encapsulates the intimate scale and symbolic weight of ancient ornament - personal artifacts once worn close to the body as protectors, status emblems, or votive offerings.
