Western Asia, Turkey, Anatolian, ca. early 20th century CE. A handwoven wool prayer or small area rug executed in the slit-weave kilim technique, producing fine vertical slits where contrasting color fields meet. The composition features a hooked mihrab arch topped by a white tree of life motif, flanked by two red tree of life forms, symbolizing protection, continuity, and spiritual ascent. Bold orange, reds, ochres, creams, and dark accents are arranged in crisp geometric patterns, with denticulated borders framing the central field in a manner characteristic of Anatolian weaving traditions. Size: 75" L x 43.5" W (190.5 cm x 110.5 cm)

  • Condition: Slits have separated, creating larger perforations in several areas. Losses are present to the tassels, as well as to warp and weft fibers, particularly at the corners, resulting in fraying and minor unraveling. Several areas show old thread repairs and reinforcements intended to stabilize the textile and prevent further tearing. Surface discoloration and staining are visible, consistent with age and use; the rug appears to have been used in a high-traffic area and is not recommended for floor use due to the loosened slits, but is suitable for wall mounting or display.
