Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. A striking Chancay pottery figural jar modeled in the form of a seated anthropomorphic figure, the vessel's rounded body serving as the body with bent legs in relief and its cylindrical neck rendered as a head with modeled facial features. The wide, staring eyes, open mouth, and tear-like painted markings below the eyes convey a dramatic expression, while applied ears and hands enhance the figure's sculptural presence. The surface is further decorated in black-on-cream pigments, with geometric bands, triangular patterns about the shoulders, and stylized motifs arranged in panels across the body. These motifs, typical of Chancay ceramic painting, reflect the culture's highly developed visual language, which often combined figurative imagery with abstract design. The jar retains traces of painted ornamentation despite surface wear, attesting to its ritual or funerary context. Size: 6.3" Diameter x 11.1" H (16 cm x 28.2 cm)

Chancay vessels of this type were often placed in burials as offerings, embodying both spiritual symbolism and community identity. The combination of modeled form and painted decoration exemplifies the artistry of the Chancay ceramic tradition, which flourished along Peru's central coast during the Middle Horizon and Late Intermediate Period.
