Description:

East Asia, China, Song Dynasty, ca. 960 to 1278 CE. A graceful Qingbai covered pot, notable for its luminous bluish-white glaze that pools to a soft pale green in recesses. The pot has a rounded body rising from a narrow foot, with a neatly fitted domed lid surmounted by a looped handle finial. On the shoulder, a scrolling motif subtly emerges beneath the glaze, while the domed lid displays a swirling floral motif. The lid's edge is shaped into delicate scallops, complementing the harmonious form of the vessel. Covered boxes like this were often used to store powders, cosmetics, and other daily-use items. Qingbai ware, defined by its smooth, glassy glaze, originated under the Song Dynasty and reached its height from the 10th through 13th centuries. Its signature pale blue-green tint or "shadow" results from a small amount of iron oxide in a reduction-fired kiln, which also allowed for thin-walled, delicate forms. Size: 4.5" Diameter x 4.25" H (11.4 cm x 10.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-T.F. Holy Lands collection, formed since the 1960s
