Description:

**Originally Listed At $350**

East Asia, China, Ming to Qing Dynasty, ca. 15th to 19th century CE. A serene and beautifully crafted lacquered and gilt wooden statue of the bodhisattva Guanyin, depicted seated in a meditative pose with hands folded in the dhyana mudra. She rests atop a blooming lotus pedestal, itself supported by a circular base. A separate mandorla back panel, forming a halo, is affixed to the pedestal. The surface was once richly adorned, with remains of gold gilding still visible on the flowing robes and cinnabar red pigment lingering on the base. Although the mandorla obscures the verso of the figure, close inspection reveals a square panel covering a niche in Guanyin's back - likely used for inserting prayers, relics, or consecration offerings. The mandorla panel is a later addition, as suggested by the nail placements and a groove in the pedestal that originally would have supported a tenon-fitted backplate. Size: 5.25" W x 12.75" H (13.3 cm x 32.4 cm); gold quality: 22%
