Description:

**Originally Listed At $350**

East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A sancai glazed ceramic model of a funerary palanquin, rendered in architectural form with an open front and a bench-like seat inside, molded lattice windows on three sides, and a detachable lid topped with a lotus-bud finial. This miniature served as a symbolic transport for the deceased, imagined as being carried by attendants in the afterlife. Four sets of pierced holes along the walls indicate where wooden poles would have originally been inserted - suggesting it was conceived as a shoulder-borne palanquin. Coated in a classic sancai glaze of green and amber with black and pink cold-painting on the lid, the model would have been placed in a tomb as a mingqi, or "spirit object," intended to provide comfort and status to the deceased. Such objects were not literal reproductions but rather idealized visions of life - reflecting the existence the deceased enjoyed or aspired to, complete with attendants, conveyances, and symbols of dignity and prestige. Size: 6.3" L x 5.5" W x 13.5" H (16 cm x 14 cm x 34.3 cm)
