Description:

Pre-Columbian West Mexico, Colima, Pihuamo Style, ca. 300 BCE – 300 CE. A tall and elegant standing female figure from the Pihuamo sculptural tradition of the Colima region. Shown upright with legs slightly apart and arms confidently crossed high across the chest—a hallmark posture of Pihuamo figures—the sculpture conveys a sense of composure and authority. She wears a broad, ribbed cap and large earspools, with traces of cream pigment highlighting the neckline and garment edges. The warm red slip and mineral deposits across the surface attest to long-term burial within a shaft tomb. Typical of the Pihuamo style, the figure presents simplified but confident modeling, a strong silhouette, and characteristic facial features including coffee-bean eyes and a small incised mouth. Size: 5.75" W x 15.25" H (14.6 cm x 38.7 cm)

Interestingly, this hollow-molded figure shows no "obvious" vent holes - created in hollow potteries so they do not explode in the kiln. In this example, the pierced ears act as these all important vent holes without detracting from the elegance of the sculpted figure.
