Lot 11
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE; Michoacan, ca. 300 BCE to 800 CE; Andean Region, Narino, ca. 500 to 800 CE. A group of four pottery vessels representing distinct ceramic traditions of ancient Mesoamerica and the northern Andes. The largest piece is a Chupicuaro pedestal bowl, its flaring upper walls and drum-shaped foot coated in the culture's characteristic red slip and decorated with bold geometric painting. The angled bands and repeating triangular fields are hallmarks of Chupicuaro production in the Bajio region of central Mexico. Two vessels originate from Michoacan: a compact jar with a flaring neck and rounded shoulder, decorated with painted geometric bands, and a shallow bowl with curving walls and an interior enlivened by red, orange, and brown linear and block-patterned designs. Both pieces reflect Michoacan's established polychrome tradition, known for its balanced forms and carefully layered surface decoration. Size of largest (Chupicuaro pedestal): 5.5" Diameter x 3.4" H (14 cm x 8.6 cm)
The fourth vessel is a small Narino pedestal bowl from the highlands of southern Colombia or northern Ecuador. Its sharply concave waist and red-orange slip, gently softened by burial deposits, evoke the region's preference for symmetrical silhouettes and mineral-based pigments. Together, the four vessels offer a cross-regional view of ceramic styles spanning western Mexico and the northern Andes, each distinguished by its own aesthetic vocabulary and technical approach.
