Lot 122
Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Guanacaste-Nicoya area, ca. 600 to 1100 CE. A compact yet expressive ceramic vessel, this Costa Rican tripod rattle stands firmly on three hollow legs, each pierced to produce sound when the vessel is moved. The rounded body rises to a slightly flared rim, its warm earthen surface bearing the marks of hand forming, firing, and long burial. Tripod rattle vessels such as this are characteristic of ancient Costa Rican ceramic traditions, where sound, movement, and ritual were closely intertwined. Small pellets sealed within the hollow legs create a gentle rattle, suggesting the vessel was meant to be lifted, shaken, or carried during ceremonial activities rather than used solely as a static container. The three supports are sculpted with subtle zoomorphic modeling and slotted openings, adding both visual rhythm and acoustic function. Size: 5.4" L x 5" W x 6.8" H (13.7 cm x 12.7 cm x 17.3 cm)
The surface shows areas of wear, mineral accretion, and firing variation, lending the piece an honest, tactile presence. Its form balances utility and symbolism, reflecting a worldview in which everyday materials could serve as instruments of ceremony, sound, and spiritual communication. Both sculptural and functional, this tripod rattle vessel offers a vivid glimpse into the ritual life of ancient Costa Rica, where clay, sound, and movement came together in acts of meaning and memory.
