Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italy, Apulia, Daunian culture, ca. 6th to 4th century BCE. A striking terracotta kyathos (wine ladle) decorated with broad painted bands encircling both the interior and exterior, with the tondo featuring concentric circles often interpreted as protective symbols against the evil eye. Rising from the rim is a bold strap handle surmounted by a horned finial framing a stylized owl-like visage - alternatively interpreted as a figure with upraised arms. Just below the crest, a pair of perforations near the rim further resemble eyes, while additional diamond and rectangular motifs animate the surface, giving the overall form the appearance of a horned ungulate head. Likely intended for a funerary context, this kyathos blends utility with symbolism, serving as both a practical vessel and a powerful talisman. Size: 6.75" Diameter x 6.5" H (17.1 cm x 16.5 cm)
