Description:

Egypt, tIP, ca. 1200 BCE. Fine blue glazed faience pottery amulet depicting the god Horus, as the hawk headed god, striding on an integral rectangular plinth base. Wearing the royal wig, a short pleated kilt, sun disc crown with a ureaus serpent in the center.

Horus — Ḥr, "the distant one" — was among the most ancient and universally venerated deities of the Egyptian pantheon, the hawk-headed sky god whose eyes were the sun and the moon, and whose living embodiment on earth was the reigning pharaoh. As the son of Osiris and Isis, Horus represented the triumph of order (ma'at) over chaos, and his image as the striding falcon-headed king was one of the most potent protective presences in both royal and private Egyptian religious life. Size: 1.88”H (4.8cm).

Provenance: Private Connecticut collection. Ex. Dr. John N. Winnie, Jr. collection, St. Marys, Georgia, 1980’s-1990’s.
