Description:

Egypt, new Kingdom, ca. 1550 - 1295 BCE. Carved red jasper sow amulet standing on an integral rectangular plinth base, her nose held to the ground. Biconical drilled suspension loop in the top center of her back. A rare type. While red jasper sow amulets specifically are rare, they represent the Egyptian sky goddess Nut, who was often depicted as a sow. Red jasper was a highly valued "blood-red" stone in ancient Egypt, frequently used for protective amulets like the Tyet (Knot of Isis) or Ib (Heart) because of its association with vitality and life force. The goddess Nut was believed to swallow the stars at dawn and give birth to them again at night. This cycle of consumption and rebirth was sometimes linked to a sow’s behavior with her piglets. Size: 1.25”L x 1”H (3.2 x 2.5cm).

Provenance: Connecticut collection. Ex. J. Claessen, Bladel, Holland, a collection formed in the 1950’s - 1970’s.
