Description:

Egypt, New Kingdom to Late Period, ca. 1550 to 332 BCE. A wearable necklace of ancient Egyptian faience beads, restrung on a modern strand with a secure lobster claw clasp. The design is composed of a double strand of small discoid and tubular beads in pale green and turquoise hues. The two strands join together at the center, where a striking fringe of elongated cylindrical pendant beads is suspended, and again at each end near the clasp and loop. The pendant beads are separated by smaller discoid spacers, several in contrasting colors including white, deep red, and yellow, which animate the composition with lively variation. Size of largest bead: 1.1" L x 0.1" W (2.8 cm x 0.3 cm); of strand: 23" L (58.4 cm)

Faience, a non-clay ceramic with a lustrous glaze, was among the Egyptians' most symbolic materials. Its brilliant blue-green tones represented fertility, renewal, and the eternal vitality of the Nile, while its presence in both personal and funerary adornment served to invoke divine protection and rebirth. This necklace, with its elegant fringe and careful restrung form, preserves the beauty and symbolism of antiquity while offering wearability today.
