Lot 119
Egypt, Late Dynastic period, Dynasties 26 to 31, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A vivid symbol of rebirth and divine protection, this Egyptian faience winged scarab amulet spreads its outstretched wings in brilliant turquoise-blue glaze, echoing the celestial sweep of the sun across the sky. The composition is formed from three separate ancient amulets - a central scarab and two individually carved wings - now carefully strung together on a modern strand with ancient faience and glass beads. The scarab, modeled with a domed back and incised linear details, represents Khepri, the morning manifestation of the sun god who rolls the solar disk across the heavens as the dung beetle rolls its ball of earth. In Egyptian belief, the scarab embodied regeneration, transformation, and eternal return. When flanked by wings, the motif becomes even more potent, invoking protection and the soul's safe passage through the afterlife. Size of scarab: 1.2" W x 2.1" H (3 cm x 5.3 cm); of scarab with wings: 5.3" W x 2.1" H (13.5 cm x 5.3 cm)
The wings are separately formed, their broad, tapering forms pierced for suspension. Traces of glaze and areas of earthen encrustation attest to age and burial. The accompanying beads - a mix of ancient faience and glass in muted tones - further enrich the composition, though the present strand is modern, assembled for stability and display. Such winged scarabs were worn as amulets or incorporated into funerary adornment, placed upon the chest of the deceased as a powerful safeguard. Compact yet visually commanding, this example captures the luminous color and spiritual intensity that define Late Dynastic Egyptian faience work.
