Description:

Magna Graecia, ca. late 7th-6th century BCE. A cast bronze vessel spout, Greek Archaic period, circa 7th–5th century BCE. The tapered spout carries a finely detailed standing lion in the round — its mane, musculature, and alert posture rendered with the characteristic stylized naturalism of Archaic Greek animal sculpture — surmounted by a bull's head finial at the terminal. The combination of lion and bull on a single object is deeply charged within the ancient Greek symbolic repertoire, the two animals representing the apex predator and his prey — a pairing that appears across Archaic and Classical Greek art in contexts from architectural sculpture to metalwork, consistently evoking themes of power, domination, and the cosmic order.

Elaborate bronze spouts of this type were attachments for prestige vessels — hydria, kraters, or ritual cauldrons — used in symposiastic, votive, or funerary contexts. Size: 3”H x 3.5”L (7.6 x 8.9cm).

Provenance: Private Connecticut collection. Ex. J.R. collection, NYC., acquired from Fortuna Fine Arts, NYC., 2009. Ex. Dr. Morkramer collection, Germany, 1970’s.
