Lot 31
**Originally Listed At $350**
Ancient Europe, Bronze Age, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A compelling group of four Bronze Age bracelets, each fashioned from solid bronze rods hammered and coiled into spiraled forms. The bracelets vary in thickness and patination, displaying rich green and brown surfaces characteristic of ancient bronze that has aged over millennia. Their design, with overlapping terminals, suggests both aesthetic appeal and practical adaptability, allowing the ornaments to be adjusted slightly to the wearer's wrist. The group includes three standard-sized examples intended for adult wear, alongside a notably smaller bracelet that warrants attention. Such diminutive pieces are typically interpreted in two ways: either as adornments for children, indicating that jewelry played a role across all ages in Bronze Age societies, or as symbolic votive offerings deposited in ritual contexts. Size of largest: 3.3" Diameter (8.4 cm)
In either case, the small bracelet highlights the cultural and social importance of personal ornamentation in Bronze Age Europe, not only as jewelry but also as a medium of exchange and as ritual deposits in hoards. Together, these bracelets represent the interplay of utility, adornment, and meaning in prehistoric life, embodying both the technical skill of ancient bronze-workers and the enduring human impulse toward decoration and symbolic expression.
