Description:

South America, Peru / Bolivia, Aymara peoples, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A pair of traditional handwoven bags, known as chuspas or coca bags, created by Andean weavers using natural wool fibers dyed in earthy tones of red, brown, cream, and umber. Each rectangular textile features vertical bands with subtle geometric patterning, created on a backstrap loom, and retains twisted cord straps for suspension. These small bags were used to carry coca leaves and personal items, serving both functional and symbolic roles within Andean communities. Mounted together in a modern acrylic display case, the textiles highlight the region's ancient weaving traditions and the enduring aesthetic of Andean craftsmanship. Size of case: 22.5" L x 14" W (57.2 cm x 35.6 cm); textile bag: 7" L x 6" W (17.8 cm x 15.2 cm)
