Lot 29A
Magna Graecia, South Italy, Gnathian, possibly by the Knudesen Group, ca. 300 BCE. A skyphos, a deep drinking vessel with twin horizontal handles, decorated in the refined Gnathian style that flourished in Apulia during the late Classical and early Hellenistic periods. The vessel's surface is enlivened by two registers of carefully fluted ribs that give it a tactile, architectural quality, while painted ornamentation in added white and red pigment provides striking contrast against the lustrous black glaze. Just beneath the rim, both sides feature a delicate frieze of dotted bud-like motifs enclosing a central rosette within concentric circles, a hallmark of Apulian workshops. A secondary decorative register of nested s-scrolls, bordered by thin red lines, elegantly interrupts the ribbing, enhancing the vessel's rhythm and balance. These textured ribs were probably functional as well as decorative, aiding in grip when the vessel was slippery - particularly useful after many rounds of wine. Size: 8" L x 4.5" Diameter x 6.5" H (20.3 cm x 11.4 cm x 16.5 cm)
Gnathian pottery, named after the site of Egnazia in Apulia where it was first identified, is particularly celebrated for its use of added colors and delicate motifs - an innovation over earlier South Italian red-figure styles. These vessels were often associated with the symposium, the ritualized drinking party where wine, conversation, and performance were integral to elite social life. The sophistication of this skyphos, with its glossy glaze and intricate detailing, reflects the cultural vibrancy of Magna Graecia, where Greek colonists and local Italic peoples exchanged artistic traditions and created new hybrid forms.
