Description:

Native American, northeastern United States, Hopewell Indians, Middle Woodland period., ca. 200 - 900 CE. A fine smoking pipe from the Hopewell Indians, hand-carved from a mottled dark-grey stone with faint black and yellow-green inclusions. The pipe consists of a slender platform with a curved profile and a small mouthpiece on one end, and a stylized kneeling figure on top with a dug-out receptacle in its back to contain smoking materials. The figure's head displays a meditative countenance with recessed eyes, a bulbous nose, a gaping mouth, and a simple cap with a radiating roundel on the right side and a lattice-pattern roundel on the backside. Size: 8.5" W x 3" H x 1.5" D (21.6 cm W x 7.6 cm H x 3.8 cm D)

This piece has been tested by CIRAM Lab, France. They have concluded the piece is ancient and of the time period presented. A bound report will accompany the piece.

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection, ex private Southern California, USA collection of Mary Sutfin, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
