Description:

United States, Native American, eastern US, Middle Woodland period., ca. 100 BCE - 400 CE. Stone effigy pipe depicting a watchful raccoon perched upon a full-bodied fish, its scales crisply incised and tail neatly ridged, while the raccoon’s back is hollowed to form a deep bowl that connects via an internal draft channel to an aperture at the fish’s head. Worked from a fine-grained, umber to russet stone and carefully ground and burnished, the composition shows drilled and knife-cut details that animate the muzzle, ears, fins, and gills; the underside is subtly flattened for stability when set down. Size: 3.5" W x 1.625" H x 1.125" D (8.9 cm W x 4.1 cm H x 2.9 cm D)

Effigy pipes within the Hopewell interaction sphere served in ritual and social ceremonies, likely signaling status and embodying totemic or cosmological beings; parallels for such zoomorphic pipes are held in museum collections including the Mound City Group and the Field Museum. CIRAM tested, with scientific report available upon request.

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection
