Lot 34
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Mentawai Islands, Siberut island, culture, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A monumental wooden feast platter hand-carved from a single piece of wood, with a long, gently curving basin and tapering ends. Each terminal features a carved simian head with recessed eyes and rounded cheeks - monkey guardians perhaps intended to spiritually oversee ritual consumption. The interior is worn from extended use, likely serving or preparning sago, a staple for the people of the Mentawai Islands. Plates of this type were central to feasting traditions and may symbolize the "ship of the dead", a vessel metaphorically carrying the soul to the afterlife. Size: 36" L x 12.5" W x 4" H (91.4 cm x 31.8 cm x 10.2 cm)
