Description:

Middle Egypt, new Kingdom, Amarna Period, Dynasty 18. Reign of Akhenaten, 1353 - 1336 BCE. Solid cast silver finger ring bearing the cartouche of Akhenaten. The cartouches of Akhenaten are distinctive markers of the Amarna Period, reflecting his radical shift from traditional polytheism to the worship of the sun disk, the Aten. King Akhenaten (known before the fifth year of his reign as Amenhotep IV), was an ancient Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty. A rare, important and beautiful example. Cartouche Evolution: Initially ascending the throne as Amenhotep IV, his early cartouches contain traditional royal titles. Around the fifth year of his reign, he changed his name to Akhenaten ("Effective for the Aten") and updated his royal iconography accordingly. Akhenaten's Personal Name: Typically written with the hieroglyphs for the Aten (disk), a crested ibis (spirit/effective), and a sieve (phonogram "kh"). Throne Name (Prenomen): Nefer-kheperu-Re Wa-en-Re ("Beautiful are the manifestations of Re, the Unique one of Re"). Aten Cartouches: Uniquely, the deity Aten was also given royal status and enclosed within twin cartouches, a practice usually reserved for pharaohs. According to AI: “Akhenaten (ruled c. 1353–1336 B.C.) was an 18th Dynasty Egyptian pharaoh famous for abandoning traditional polytheism to establish the world’s first known monotheistic state religion focused on the sun disk, Aten. Originally Amenhotep IV, he shifted to a radical, naturalistic art style, founded a new capital city at Amarna, and was considered a "heretic" by his successors.”. Ring size: 7, 18 gr.

Provenance: Private NYC. collection, acquired from the collection of Gil Chaya, 10/9/2012. with a copy of the full metallurgy report, from PAZ LAB, 2012.
