Lot 628
Mojeno Daro, India. Mature Harappan period, ca. 2800 - 2500 B.C. Two square burnt steatite stamp seals. The slightly larger example is inscribed with a profile of a bull, with an altar under his raised head, and an inscription above, Indus script , partly syllabic, partly transitional form of writing. Missing the top button portion of the perforated lug on the top center. Encrusted top surface. Ancient encrusted loss to approximately 1/3 of the stamp surface, and repaired from two original pieces, some minor loss along the break line. Together with another stamp seal, of similar design. Repaired from two original pieces with break line left visible, some very minor loss along the break line, some ancient loss to the top of the perforated lug. Stamp seals were used in antiquity as marks of ownership and badges of status. In the large urban centers of the Harappan civilization, square-shaped stamp seals were found in excavations. They are engraved with images of wild or domestic animals, humans, fantastic creatures, and possibly divinities. Most of the square stamp seals have inscriptions along the top edge. The Indus script, invented around 2600 B.C., is yet to be fully deciphered. Size: 1-1/4" x 1-3/8" & 1" x 1".
