Jim Dine (American, b. 1935). "Tin Shears" from the "Ten Winter Tools" series, lithograph in colors, 1973. Edition 9 of 10. Signed, dated, and numbered in pencil below image. Label on verso from Leslie Sacks Fine Art, Los Angeles, CA. An elegant depiction of an ordinary object, tin shears, by world renowned artist Jim Dine. Dine had this to say about his Ten Winter Tools series, "Tools were an extension of my feelings. They had nothing to do with the conceptual. That is why I always felt like such an outsider in a conceptual age. They are not doing something in a Surrealist way. It's not the 'Dance of the Brooms.' Like everything else I do, the Tool paintings are self-portraits." Size: 26.25" L x 20" W (66.7 cm x 50.8 cm) Size (frame): 28" L x 21.75" W (71.1 cm x 55.2 cm)
About the Artist: Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Jim Dine studied poetry at the University of Cincinnati from 1953 to 1957 and also attended the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. He received his BFA from Ohio University in Athens, Georgia and moved to New York in 1958. In New York, he took part in performances later dubbed "Happenings" with fellow artists John Cage, Claes Oldenburg, and Robert Whitman. Although he was often associated with the Pop Art movement, he rejected this, stating "Pop is concerned with exteriors ⦠I'm concerned with interiors."
The subjects of Dine's drawings, prints, paintings, and sculptures were usually ordinary objects such as tools. Interestingly, he worked at his grandfather's hardware store during his youth, and this would influence his fascination with ordinary objects. In his words, "I grew up with tools ⦠I've always been enchanted by these objects made by anonymous hands."
Dine's art has been broadly exhibited, and his major retrospectives include the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York (1970), the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York (1999), and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. (2004). Dine's work is held at prestigious museums such as The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Modern in London, the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, Spain, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, MN.
