Description:

John Lindus (British-born living in Greece, b. 1951). "Trees by the Aegean" acrylic on canvas, 2004. Part of "The Colors of Greece" series. Signed at lower left and titled on verso. Label with date and title on verso. A grove of sculptural trees rises with quiet authority, their branching limbs unfurling in looping, deliberate gestures across a field of luminous color. Painted in layered tones of rust, terracotta, and ember, the trunks press forward into the viewer's space, while beyond them the Aegean stretches in a calm, horizontal band of blue-green. The meeting of land, water, and sky is reduced to broad passages of color, allowing the scene to unfold with a sense of clarity and restraint. Lindus constructs the composition through contrast - vertical movement against horizontal stillness, dense foreground against open distance. The trees serve as both threshold and anchor, framing the sea without obscuring it, as if the viewer stands just within a coastal grove looking outward. Size: 23.5" W x 23.5" H (59.7 cm x 59.7 cm)

The curving shoreline at left introduces a subtle sense of depth, while the simplified forms evoke not a specific location but the essence of the Aegean landscape itself.

Created in 2004 as part of his ongoing "The Colors of Greece" series, the painting reflects Lindus's long engagement with the Mediterranean following his move from England to Greece around 1995. He has spent significant time on the island of Samos, where the interplay of light, sea, and terrain informs much of his work. Though his life and travels have extended beyond a single place, including periods elsewhere in Europe, his connection to the Greek landscape remains central to his artistic vision.

Trained as both a painter and photographer, Lindus approaches the canvas with an eye for structure and balance, yet his handling remains instinctive and unforced. Details are pared down, edges softened or reinforced as needed, and color carries the emotional weight of the scene. In this work, the trees become more than botanical forms - they read as living markers of place, shaped by wind, light, and time, standing at the quiet edge of land where the Aegean begins.
