Description:

Japan, ca. 14,500 - 300 BCE. Red-brown pottery vessel featuring a tapered cylindrical body with a richly textured surface, a wide collar rim lip decorated in bold relief with four large wave-like elements of great sculptural energy, and a tall pointed loop handle rising dramatically from the rim.

The Jomon period represents Japan’s Neolithic era, characterized by sedentary hunter-gatherers and some of the world’s oldest known ceramic vessels. Defined by “cord-marked” (Jomon) pottery, these coil-built pots evolved from simple, functional containers to ornate “flame-style” vessels, reflecting advanced artistic, spiritual, and culinary practices, including the use of clay dogu figurines. Size: 11.63”H x 8”W (29.5 x 20.3cm).

Provenance: Ex. Splendor of the Worlds Gallery. Ex. Chicago Collection.
