Description:

Tibet, ca. 18th - 19th century. Tibet, 18th–19th century CE. A large and magnificent copper ritual bumpa. Features a wide down-folded collar rim decorated in relief with stylized lotus petals, a tapered bulbous body painted with rich multicolor traditional decoration, and an integral pedestal foot with matching relief petal decoration — the lotus motif recurring throughout as the universal Buddhist symbol of purity and spiritual awakening.

Draped with a remarkable silk cover of nine layered petal-like elements, the outer layers bearing finely embroidered scrolliate decoration in rich jewel tones of burgundy, teal, and gold. The silk covering transforms the bumpa into a devotional object of extraordinary visual splendor, the layered textile elements echoing the lotus petal imagery of the copper vessel beneath.

Used to contain and dispense consecrated water or amrita — the nectar of immortality — during initiation ceremonies and puja offerings. Size: 10”H x 10”W (25.4 x 25.4cm).

Provenance: Private American collection. Ex. fashion designer Mary McFadden collection, (1938-2024). Objects from the McFadden Collection have been exhibited at institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and numerous other distinguished museums across the United States and abroad.
