Jon Zahourek (American, b. 1940). Female Nude. Oil on board, n.d. Signed at mid-right. Rendered in broad, confident strokes and a luminous palette of fleshy pinks, warm ochres, and soft whites, this intimate oil painting by Jon Zahourek captures the essence of the human form with immediacy and sensual presence. The nude female figure reclines against a backdrop of abstracted, brush-laden white, her posture relaxed, arms draped over what may be the back of a chair or couch, legs splayed forward in a pose that feels both grounded and ethereal. Thick impasto defines the contours of the body, giving volume and movement to the planes of flesh and shadow. Zahoureks handling of paint is loose yet deliberate - a lyrical balance between suggestion and form. The face, only lightly articulated, is framed by a cascade of dark brown hair that contrasts vividly against the soft light behind her. Size of painting: 8.75" W x 11.75" H (22.2 cm x 29.8 cm); frame: 19.25" W x 22.25" H (48.9 cm x 56.5 cm)
This subtle tension between intimacy and anonymity draws the viewer into a quiet moment of vulnerability, presence, and painterly exploration. Zahourek, known not only as a painter but also a sculptor, medical illustrator, and educator, brings a studied anatomical awareness to the composition. Yet here, the academic is softened by immediacy - the emotional charge of a body caught not in idealized stillness but in lived, relaxed repose. The work speaks to a lineage of expressive figurative painting, echoing the influence of Bay Area artists and modernist figurative traditions, while remaining rooted in Zahoureks unique sensibility - tactile, spontaneous, and deeply human.
In the 1960s, Jon Zahourek dropped out of college to become an artist. By way of Taos, New Mexico and later Denver, Colorado Zahourek was part of a thriving community of artists, exhibiting his work with prominent contemporaries including Ned Jacobs, Buffalo Kaplinski, George Carlson, and Fritz White. In the 1970s, Zahourek moved to New York to teach painting. He continued as an artist and educator, and eventually fueled his passion for anatomy into developing a system for teaching anatomy which has been used by more than 6,000 classrooms across the United States.
