Description:

Native American, North America, Archaic to Woodland periods, ca. 3000 BCE to 1000 CE. A finely varied group of five stone atlatl weights, each shaped through grinding and polishing into smooth, balanced forms designed to enhance the performance of the spear-thrower. Composed of dense stones including granite, slate, and other hard lithic materials, the examples range from elongated, spindle-like forms to a more bulbous, bell-shaped weight and a perforated specimen likely used for hafting. Several retain a high polish, while others show light surface wear consistent with age and handling. Their symmetry and tactile refinement reflect both functional precision and an appreciation for form. Known as bannerstones, these weights were mounted onto atlatls to improve stability and momentum during use. Size of largest: 2.9" L x 2.1" W (7.4 cm x 5.3 cm)

Beyond their practical role, such objects are often interpreted as markers of skill, status, or ceremonial significance, making this group a compelling representation of early North American hunting technology and craftsmanship.
