Description:

Native American, Southeastern United States, Mississippian culture, ca. 900 to 1500 CE. A Mississippian pottery jar with a rounded globular body and short, slightly flaring neck. The vessel is formed from buff-gray earthen clay and left undecorated, emphasizing its simple, balanced form and the subtle tonal variations created during firing. Jars of this type were commonly used for storing food, water, or other household provisions and reflect the practical ceramic traditions of Mississippian communities across the Mississippi River Valley. This example has notable modern provenance, formerly part of the Andy Warhol Collection and sold at Sotheby's New York on April 28, 1988 in "The Andy Warhol Collection: American Indian Art," lot 1622 (1 of 16). Size: 8.3" Diameter x 7.3" H (21.1 cm x 18.5 cm)

Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection; ex-Daniel Wolf, New York, USA collection; ex-Sotheby's New York, April 28th, 1988, "The Andy Warhol Collection: American Indian Art," lot 1622 (1 of 16); ex-Andy Warhol Collection
