Description:

Near East, The Levant, Israel, Canaan, Iron Age to Persian Period, ca. 1200 to 300 BCE. A monumental pottery storage jar with a rounded ovoid body tapering to a rounded base and surmounted by a short, slightly flared neck with a simple rolled rim. The vessel exhibits a burnished umber-brown surface with faint black bands and registers of simple linear and scalloped motifs visible from the neck to the lower body - suggestive of early Iron Age decorative traditions. Such large storage jars were utilitarian objects, likely used for holding water, oil, or grain in domestic or communal contexts. A custom brass plaque affixed to the shoulder indicates its provenance from Israel and approximate dating. The plaque dates the jar to 930 to 386 BCE, spanning the late Iron Age through the early Persian period - a dynamic era in the ancient Levant marked by the rise and fall of the Israelite kingdoms, the Babylonian exile, and subsequent Persian rule. Size: 19" Diameter x 23" H (48.3 cm x 58.4 cm).

Provenance: private Boca Raton, Florida, USA collection acquired from Baidun Gallery, Jerusalem, Israel
