Lot 457
**Originally Listed At $300**
Roman, Holyland, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE; Pre-Columbian, Maya, ca. 300 to 900 CE. An evocative trio of ancient ceramic forms bridging continents and centuries. At the heart of the group stands a tall Maya cylinder vessel, its sleek silhouette rising from a subtly tapered base to a wide flaring rim. Incised with a pair of horizontal raised bands and evenly burnished in a pale buff tone, it exemplifies the minimal yet harmonious proportions characteristic of Classic Period Ulua Valley wares. Such vessels were likely used for ritual drinking, perhaps of cacao, and would have once formed part of a noble's feasting set. Accompanying it are two Roman-era vessels from the Holy Land, both more modest in scale but equally rich in historical texture. The first is a petite juglet with a rounded globular body and narrow neck, once used to store precious oils or perfumes. Covered in an earthen patina, it bears witness to centuries of burial and careful preservation. Size of largest (beaker): 5.3" Diameter x 5" H (13.5 cm x 12.7 cm)
Completing the trio is a finely molded oil lamp with a heart-shaped nozzle and concentric ring motifs around the fill hole, framed by a decorative border of impressed scallops or petals. Designed for portability and domestic use, such lamps illuminated households across Roman Judaea, casting flickering light upon the rhythms of daily life. Together, these vessels reflect a wide arc of ancient material culture - Mesoamerican ritual, Roman domesticity, and the shared human impulse to mold earth into meaning.
