Description:

East Asia, Japan, Meiji era., ca. 1800 - 1933 CE. A monumental carved wood screen set within a fitted frame and removable base, centered by a high-relief panel depicting the legendary Takasago couple, Jo and Uba, spirits of Japanese folklore who symbolize a long and harmonious marriage. The figures stand on a misty shore beneath a gnarled pine tree, holding a rake and broom, with a crane flying above the waves. The upper register is decorated with gilt clouds and a deep red moon against a dark ground, evoking a moonlit scene associated with the legend. The verso is carved with a blossoming cherry branch and a bird is depicted with remnants of nacre applique, while the lower panel shows bamboo leaves and pinecones with red and green applique accents and an incised signature. The upper corners are reinforced with decorative copper openwork brackets. Size: 47.5" L x 20.5" W x 69.5" H (120.6 cm x 52.1 cm x 176.5 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired before 2000
