Description:

North America, United States, Kansas, Western Interior Seaway, Late Cretaceous period, ca. 87 to 82 million years ago. A group of three fossilized mosasaur vertebrae preserved in dense mineralized bone, each showing the characteristic spool-shaped form with worn articular faces and remnants of neural arch structures. Mosasaurs were large marine reptiles that lived during the Late Cretaceous period and dominated the ancient oceans. It was not a dinosaur, but a distant relative of modern lizards and snakes, adapted for life in the sea with a long streamlined body, powerful tail, and paddle-like limbs. These marine remains originate from the Niobrara Formation, deposited when Kansas lay beneath the vast Western Interior Seaway. Size: 4.6" L x 1.75" W (11.7 cm x 4.4 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.
