Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Narino culture, ca. 9th to 15th century CE. A finely formed Narino pottery cup raised on a flaring pedestal foot, the wide bowl gently tapering outward from a narrow waist to a rounded rim. The interior is slipped in a warm red tone, while the exterior is adorned with negative resist decoration in black over red. Bold geometric motifs encircle the bowl, including stepped forms and diamond-shaped panels filled with fine linear patterning. Horizontal bands frame the design, creating a structured and rhythmic composition typical of Narino ceramic traditions. The pedestal base is left largely undecorated, emphasizing the contrast between the painted upper register and the plain lower support. An elegant example of Narino negative resist ware, this cup reflects the technical precision and graphic clarity that define the region's ceramic production. Size: 5.3" Diameter x 4" H (13.5 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: private St. Petersburg, Florida, USA collection imported into US before 1990; ex-Cucunuba Galeria Artesanal, Bogota, Colombia
