Lot 51
Native American, Midwest, Illinois, Pope County, Late Archaic to Early Woodland period, ca. 3000 to 500 BCE. A beautifully streamlined avian form carved in dark, polished stone, this Illinois birdstone embodies the quiet authority of ancient craftsmanship and belief. Carved from a dense, fine-grained stone with a smooth, burnished surface, the figure presents the classic horizontal profile of a perching bird. The elongated body tapers gently toward a rounded head and subtly raised tail, while a carefully modeled chest projects slightly forward, giving the sculpture a sense of contained vitality. The underside is flattened for stability, with a discreet, central projection suggesting the original placement of perforations, now worn or obscured by time and patina. Size: 2.7" L x 0.8" W x 1.1" H (6.9 cm x 2 cm x 2.8 cm)
Birdstones are among the most refined and enigmatic objects of the Late Archaic and Early Woodland cultures of the Midwest. Found predominantly in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio, they are often recovered from burial contexts, indicating ceremonial or status-related significance. Scholars have proposed that they were mounted on atlatls - spear-throwing devices - where they may have functioned as counterweights. Others suggest symbolic or totemic roles, perhaps representing clan emblems, spiritual guides, or cosmological concepts tied to the avian world.
The smooth, carefully balanced form of this example reflects the aesthetic restraint characteristic of the period. There is no extraneous ornamentation, only pure contour and proportion. The maker relied on silhouette and surface to convey meaning, reducing the bird to its essential geometry. Recovered from Pope County, Illinois, this piece stands within a long regional tradition of stone bird effigies that demonstrate both technical mastery and symbolic depth. Its dark, lustrous surface bears the quiet sheen of age, a tactile reminder of the hands that shaped it thousands of years ago and the cultural landscape from which it emerged.
