Description:

Turkey (Ottoman Empire), ca. 18th century CE. A magnificent Ottoman incense burner (buhurdan) of tombak—gilt copper alloy—featuring a domed, lobed body and lid with richly chased and openworked decoration throughout. The cover is adorned with pierced arabesques and stylized foliage, surmounted by a finial in the form of a budding pomegranate. The upper and lower halves are meticulously decorated with repeating medallions enclosing floral and foliate designs, all repoussé worked and chased in fine detail. The vessel rests atop a pedestal base, seated on its original flat tray, similarly engraved with elegant floral scrollwork. Size: 10.5" W x 11" H (26.7 cm x 27.9 cm)

Tombak was the preferred medium for elite metalwork in the Ottoman court, its bright gilded finish imitating solid gold while offering a lighter, more workable substrate. Incense burners such as this were used in both public and private rituals—within mosques, palaces, and affluent households—as part of purification rites and ceremonial gatherings. The harmonious proportions, refined ornamentation, and well-preserved gilding make this a particularly desirable example of late Ottoman tombak craftsmanship.
