Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Northwestern Africa, Upper Paleolithic to Mesolithic Period, ca. 24,000 to 8,000 years ago; and likely Pre-Columbian, Mexico, ca. 1000 CE, a small cross-cultural pairing consisting of a chert stone tool from North Africa and a pottery snake disc of unknown cultural attribution. The chert piece is knapped into a robust working form with clear flake scars and a smooth patina. Accompanying it is a circular ceramic disc modeled in raised relief as a coiled serpent, its surface showing weathering, and while the precise culture remains unidentified, TL (thermoluminescence) testing indicates an approximate age of around 1,000 years. Size of snake: 4.25" L x 0.6" W (10.8 cm x 1.5 cm)

Provenance: private Superior, Colorado, USA collection, ex Arte Primitivo for pottery, around 2010
