Description:

Eastern Mediterranean to Middle East, ca. 5th - 3rd century BCE. A core-formed glass amphoriskos, Phoenician, Eastern Mediterranean — Lebanon / Israel coastal region — Mediterranean Iron Age to Hellenistic period, circa 6th–4th century BCE. The vessel is formed over a sand or dung core in an opaque white ground, decorated with applied maroon coiled trailing bands and a wide central register of zigzag patterning in the same color — a combination of exceptional rarity in the corpus of Phoenician core-formed glass. Two small applied handles rise from the shoulder. The surface retains the characteristic iridescence of ancient glass weathering.

Core-formed glass vessels were among the most prestigious luxury objects of the ancient Mediterranean world, produced by winding molten glass threads around a removable core and then marvering the surface smooth. Size: 3.88”H x 1.25”W (9.9 x 3.2cm).

Provenance: Private NYC. collection, acquired from Bill Veres, London, 6/30/95, with copy of receipt, #14 on list.
