Description:

North America, Southern United States, Florida, Pleistocene epoch, ca. 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago. A fossilized mastodon tooth, its enamel surfaces showing heavy wear from a lifetime of grinding vegetation. The broad crown is marked by concave indentations and smoothed enamel ridges, a result of constant use over the animal's life. Mastodons, like modern elephants, shed and replaced their teeth several times, with each new set adapting to the animal's diet and age. A striking relic of Ice Age megafauna, preserving both anatomical detail and the passage of time in its fossilized form. Size: 4" L x 3" W x 3.5" H (10.2 cm x 7.6 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: private Hagar collection, Wildwood, Missouri, USA
