North America, Southern United States, Florida, Marion County, late Pleistocene, ca. 50,000 to 12,800 years ago. A rare and highly desirable fossil ulna arm bone from the extinct American lion, Panthera atrox. Measuring nearly 15 inches in length, this robust specimen represents one of the largest felids to have ever lived, an apex predator that dominated Ice Age ecosystems across North America. The ulna displays excellent preservation with dark mineralized coloration, natural surface texture, and well-defined anatomical features. Its size and heft reflect the immense power of this formidable predator, which is believed to have reached up to 25% larger than modern African lions. Fossil remains of Panthera atrox are uncommon outside of sites like Rancho La Brea, making this Florida find especially significant. A superb example of Pleistocene megafauna, mounted and ready for display. Size: 14.75" L x 3" W (37.5 cm x 7.6 cm)
The American lion (Panthera atrox) was the largest species of lion to ever exist, approximately 25% larger than modern African lions. Standing about 3.9 feet (1.2 meters) at the shoulder and measuring 5 to 8 feet (1.6 to 2.5 meters) from nose to tail tip, males weighed between 518 and 1,153 lbs (235 to 523 kg). This formidable predator was the largest carnivore of Ice Age North America, rivaled only by the giant short-faced bears in the southern regions. While Smilodon, the saber-toothed cat, is more famous, the American lion was both larger and considerably rarer in the fossil record.
