Description:

Native American, Midwestern / Southeastern United States, Mississippian / Caddo., ca. 1200 - 1400 CE. A pottery rim effigy bowl featuring a modeled zoomorphic head, limbs, and tail integrated along the vessel's rim. The head is somewhat ambiguous, suggesting either a rodent or bear-like creature, yet the elongated form with two extended legs and a trailing tail more closely suggests a bat effigy. The stretched surfaces between the lower limbs appear to evoke the webbed membranes of bat wings, reinforcing this interpretation. Such animal forms in Mississippian and Caddo ceramics can be difficult to identify with certainty, yet the wing-like treatment of the limbs strongly suggests a bat. As the only flying mammal and a nocturnal creature, the bat held symbolic associations with the Upper World within Southeastern Ceremonial Complex cosmology, a belief system that organized the universe into three interconnected realms. Size: 10.5" L x 5.75" H (26.7 cm x 14.6 cm)
